The situation is grave but not hopeless, but the Red Chinese have always shown caution when confronted with military power and the United States must remain in Vietnam to stop communist expansion. CU Mr. McNamara. (In short.)
I think that we will have to send more equipment to the Vietnamese forces and we shall require small increases in the men who are training and advising their forces. We have said that we will supply any equipment, advice and training needed by the Vietnamese. The amount of equipment sent will vary to the number and strength of the force in Vietnam. The Vietcong have infiltrated a large number of men into South Vietnam in recent months and have increased the tempo of their activities and increased efforts to upset our forces. It is almost impossible to protect our forces from the sneak attack, carried out by the guerrillas.
SCU Mr. McNamara.
Interviewer: - When asked what the official Chinese Communists can or are to do in that area he replied 'That is a good sign for me to leave. 'and refused to answer the question.
