  • Description

At midnight London time on Sunday (22 October), four gunmen were holding a Turkish airliner with 69 people aboard at Sofia airport in Bulgaria.

They offered to release the captives in return for the freedom of twelve political prisoners held in Turkey, and a safe passage to Cuba.

The gunmen--aged between eighteen and 22--seized the airliner, a Boeing 707, while it was flying between Istanbul and Ankara. There was a struggle aboard, curing which two men were wounded.

After landing at Sofia, ten people were allowed off the airliner. They included four children, two mothers, two sick passengers and the two wounded men.

Sixty passengers and nine crew remained on the airliner, which was parked in the snow on an outer runway at Sofia, ringed by floodlights.

Strict security measures were brought into force at Istanbul airport after the hijack.
