Background: The body of Malcolm X, the Negro leader who was assassinated Sunday, was identified by his wife on Monday (22 February) and then taken to a funeral home in the Negro section of Manhattan.
Several policemen were on guard as the body arrived at the funeral home Monday afternoon. A small crowd of spectators stood behind police barricades to watch. A funeral for Malcolm X has been tentatively scheduled for Saturday. The body was to be on public view Tuesday afternoon.
An autopsy was performed before the body was taken to the funeral home. The chief medical examiner said Malcolm X died of a shotgun wounds in the chest and heart, and bullet wounds in the lower extremities.
A 22-year-old Negro named Talmadge Hayer, Alias Thomas Hagan, has been charged with the murder and police are searching for more suspects.
