    THE PRESIDENT OF THE IVORY COAST'S ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCIL, M. COULIBALY, OFFICIALLY OPENED THE AGRICULTURAL SHOW AT BAOUKE ON SUNDAY. HE TOLD THE ASSEMBLED FARMERS THAT THEIR SHOW DEMONSTRATED THE PROGRESS BEING MADE BY THE IVORY COAST TOWARDS BECOMING A GREAT AGRICULTURAL COUNTRY.

    M. COULIBALY REPRESENTED PRESIDENT HOUPHOUET-BOIGNY, WHO IS HIMSELF AS FARMER WITH A PLANTATION AT YAMOUSSOKRO. THE SHOW INCLUDES AGRICULTURAL EXHIBITS FROM IVORY COAST FARMERS, AND SOME OF THE NEW MACHINES AND METHODS OF FARMING BEING INTRODUCED.

    (THE IVORY COAST GAINED ITS INDEPENDENCE FROM FRANCE IN 1960. IT HAS A FLOURISHING ECONOMY BASED ON COFFEE, COCOA, TIMBER AND TROPICAL FRUIT, WHICH HAS ATTRACTED MUCH FOREIGN INVESTMENT. THE COUNTRY HAS A STRONG FISHING INDUSTRY, AND NEW RUBBER AND PALM OIL PLANTATIONS GOING INTO PRODUCTION ARE EXPECTED TO FURTHER BOOST THE ECONOMY. THE COUNTRY'S CAPITAL, ABIDJAN, HAS DEVELOPED IN ONLY 30 YEARS FROM A SLEEPY TROPICAL TOWN OF 10,000 PEOPLE TO A SKYSCRAPER CITY OF 300,000).
