    India has observed the 27th anniversary of its independence from Britain with a flag unfurling ceremony on the ramparts of the Red Fort of the Mogul empire n Delhi.

    The Prime Minster, Mrs. Indira Ghandi officiated at the ceremony on Thursday (15 August).

    It opened with a review of a 200-strong guard of honour comprised of 50 men each from the army, navy, air force and police.

    Mrs. Ghandi then climbed ont other ramparts of the historic, 17th century fort and unfurled an Indian flag.

    She then delivered a 40-minute address in Hindi to the crowd, and the nation, in which she appealed for cooperation in combating the worst economic crisis to befall India since independence in 1947.

    Mrs. Ghandi urged the Indian people not to be pessimistic or overwhelmed by "dark clouds" and said self-confidence and determination were needed to overcome the current crisis. She said the Government fully-realised the gravity of the situation and was taking "stern measures", but the success of these measures depended on the peoples' wholehearted support and cooperation.

    Mrs. Ghandi also recited a list of the other ills facing India, including tax evasion, food adulteration, black marketeering and profiteering. In addition, she said, floods in north-east India and Bangladesh have affected about 3 million people and caused 3,000 deaths.

    Guests included a number of people described as freedom fighters during the period before independence in nineteen-forty-seven.

    Mrs. Ghandi climbed steps to the top of the Red Fort's ramparts for the high point of the ceremony, the unfurling of the Indian flag.

    But as the flag unfurled, Mrs. Ghandi addressed the crowd, and the nation in Hindi with a warning that India faced troubled times. She outlined the country's ills, including tax evasion, food adulteration, black marketeering, profiteering and the present disastrous floods. The she made a special appeal for the people' cooperation in combating the major problem. India's worst economic crisis since independence.
