    1. MALKI THE LAND OF HEAR
In the Far Eastern city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky temperatures don't go down lower than 5 to 7 degrees below freezing point However, 100 to 120 kilometres inland in the Ganal Mountain range area frosts are as low as 40 degrees.

But for the Kamchatka geologists winter doesn't mean confinement to the labs. Many scientists are outside searching for thermal waters in the famous Paratunka area, at the foot of the Avachinsk and Koryak volcanoes and the Bolshe-Banny sources.

The borers, after discovering subterranean sources of hot water, have moved on. Builders are coming instead to erect a sanatorium and a hot-house.

The Klyuchevsky complex expedition is also operating at the Iudumich River. Here gold is being sought. The effort is hardly an easy one. Therefore every find gives cause for rejoicing. One of the nuggets discovered weighs 68 grams.

Kamchatka has in recent years become an area of geological probes. Teams of the Kamchatka geological service have tapped deposits of gold, mercury, iron ore, coal and other minerals.

    2. AT THE KRASNOKAMENSK MINE IN SIBIRIA.

For years one of the richest mineral deposits in the taigaland and Sayany Mountains area remained untapped. The first scoops of iron ore was excavated here only last June. The new mine, known as the Krasnokamensk, has since shipped more than 50 thousand tons of iron ore to the Kuznetsk metallurgical complex.

The ore's pure iron content amounts to more than 65 percent. The Krasnokamensk ore mine will at full capacity turn out some 3 millions tons a year.

    3. YACHTS IN THE DESERT.

A group of Moscow sail-boat sport enthusiasts led by Vladimir Talanov have used their skill of engineers to design special sail- and - wheel yachts for a trek across the Ust-Urt and Kara-Kum deserts.

The key to success lay in the wind, physique and enthusiasm.

Brief stop-overs at night alternated with arduous movement in the day-time. Hundreds of kilometres had to be covered. The task was hardly an easy one. Some of the yachts would break down, people tired. Yet Vladimir Talanov, Mikhail Petrov, Tamara Talpyshnikova, Vladimir Zhukov and Eduard Nazarov covered one thousand 200 kilometres within 37 days. At times the yachts would develop up to 80 kilometres an hour. But when the wind died down speeds would be reduced to a mere 5 kilometres. Eventually, however, the enthusiasts reached the sea where they were met by the plying snow-white yachts.

    4. THE VEF-201 - A TRANSISTOR SET MADE IN RIGA.

In January the first VEF-201 transistor sets came off the assembly-line of the VEF plant in Riga. The set is the latest in a series of transistor radios well-known on the world market. But the VEF-201 boasts better acoustics and has been seven short-wave bands, a new achievement in Soviet radio engineering. The assembly job is done by a young workers team.

The figures flashed up on the sign-board indicate that yet another transistor-set has come off the assembly-line. The VEF plant products today go to 45 countries.

    5. NEW CAMPUS DESIGNED FOR MOSCOW COLLEGE OF CIVIL ENGINEERING.

So far it's only the preparatory stage. But soon the main building on the new campus of Moscow's Kuibyshev college of civil engineering will become reality.

A group of architects and designers of Moscow designing office No. 1 has planned that campus. It will be located in the Soviet capital's Babushkin district and consist of a study, lab, sports and recreation zones.

    6. THE WORLD OF TOYS.

These sets of toys are assembled at the national toy display hall in Moscow. More than 100 enterprises have entered 2 thousand of their best products mass produced in late 1969 and early 1970.

The toy exhibition is intended for Expo' 70.
