Background: The largest group of Vietnamese refugees, some 9,000 strong, has left cambodia to reach South Vietnam by the now standardised route down the Mekong river.

The refugees travelled by bus from refugee camps in the Phnom Penh area, and unloaded their belongings at the city's wharf.

They had brought all they could to begin a new life in South Vietnam. At the jetty they received the basic necessities of life from officials, paid for by the South Vietnamese Government.

Few of them had any money to buy household goods at the other end of their journey.

In this particularly large operation, 300 boats and sampans were required to carry the refugees. They were roped together in groups, and towed by a small river-boat.

The odd-looking flotilla moved downstream slowly, bedecked with South Vietnamese flags.

More than 159,000 Vietnamese nationals have been repatriated from Cambodia since mid-May, most of them by way of the River Mekong.

Before the deposing of Prince Sihanouk in Cambodia, there were more than 500,000 Vietnamese living in the country. Thousands were allegedly massacred following the Prince's overthrow, before the South Vietnamese Government could begin to repatriate them.
