  • Description

IN SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA, ABOUT 18,000 ROCK-THROWING STUDENTS TODAY (WEDNESDAY) CLASHED WITH RIOT POLICE IN PROTEST AGAINST ALLEGED RIGGING OF LAST WEEK'S NATIONAL ASSEMBLY ELECTIONS. YESTERDAY, MORE THAN 3,000 STUDENTS CLASHED WITH POLICE DURING DEMONSTRATIONS IN WHICH MORE THAN 450 PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED AND A NUMBER INJURED.

THE DEMONSTRATIONS FOLLOWED THE ANNOUNCEMENT THAT A MEMBER OF THE RULING DEMOCRATIC REPUBLICAN PARTY, ELECTED LAST WEEK, HAD BEEN ARRESTED DURING INVESTIGATIONS INTO ACCUSATIONS OF POLL-RIGGING.

THIRTY-THREE MEMBERS OF THE PARTY, AND SIX LOCAL GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS HAVE ALSO BEEN ARRESTED, ACCUSED OF BEING INVOLVED IN DISTURBANCES DURING THE ELECTIONS.

TODAY, HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS JOINED THOSE FROM UNIVERSITIES IN THE DEMONSTRATIONS -- THE LARGEST SINCE 1965 -- FOR THE FIRST TIME. EIGHT OF SEOUL'S 13 UNIVERSITIES WERE CLOSED TODAY AS THE DEMONSTRATIONS ENTERED THEIR THIRD DAY.

IN MORE PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATIONS, THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS HAVE BEEN HOLDING RALLIES DEMANDING THAT THE GOVERNMENT DECLARES NULL THE ELECTIONS.
