  • Description

Thousands of Greek Cypriots lined the streets of Limassol on Sunday (19 January) to watch the funeral procession of a young Greek Cypriot, killed during anti-British riots outside the British base at Akrotiri two days before.

The 18-year-old man, who originally came from Famagusta which is now Turkish-controlled, was run over by a United Nations armoured car attempting to enter the base.

Anti-British feeling on the island is now more intense than at any time since the 1950's during the campaign against EOKA guerrillas who were seeking union with Greece.

The violence was sparked off by a British decision to allow about 8,000 Turkish Cypriot refugees sheltering in the Akrotiri base to be flown to Turkey and then on to the Turkish-occupied northern areas of the island.
