Background: Venezuela's Alfredo Marcano, on the verge of exhaustion, produced a sensational tenth round knockout to take the World Boxing Association's junior lightweight title from Japanese champion Hiroshi Kobayashi at Aomori, Northern Japan, on Thursday evening (29 July). It proved a dramatic reversal of fortunes, as, in the ninth round, Marcano had taken a mandatory count of eight and seemed almost unable to continue.

This telerecorded coverage was made available by the Aomori Broadcasting Company.

SYNOPSIS: Japan's Hiroshi Kobayashi met Alfredo Marcano of Venezuela at Aomori last Thursday in a fight for the World Boxing Association's junior lightweight title. Kobayashi, in the white shorts, entered the ring as reigning champion, having successfully defended the title six times since he won it in December 1967 from Yoshiaki Numata.

Marcano bored in to his opponent from the opening bell, but after having the champion in some early trouble, and causing a nosebleed, he himself had to go onto the defensive in a corner attack from Kobayashi.

Rallying well, Kobayashi took the fight to Marcano with a succession of solid punches, again working the corners to good advantage.

In the ninth round Marcano was given a mandatory count of eight, after a punishing welter of lefts and rights to the body by Kobayashi. Before the round ended however, Marcano scored well with a right uppercut.

In the tenth, Kobayashi....fighting from instinct.....went down for an eight count after a series of soli blows to the face.

Marcano landed hard again moments later, and the fight was over.

Kobayashi's surprise defeat stunned the crowd of nearly 4,000.
