  • Description

Film shows introduction of U-S astronauts and Dyna-Soar pilots at dinner. The chief speaker was U-S Air Force Secretary Eugene Zuckert...although it was not he who introduced then men.

The occasion marked the first time the Dyna-Soar team had a chance to meet with the Air Force astronauts. The Dyna-Soar is a high-speed aircraft that skirts the fringes of outer space...and one of its pilots...Major Bob White..has won astronauts wings for flying the X-15 to a 50-mile-plus altitude.

The Dining-In is a ceremony dating back the days of King Arthur...when he gathered his knights around the "roundtable" for an evening's festivities. The Royal Air Force adopted some of King Arthur's Customs and introduced the Dining In affair. The U-S Air Force, in turn, has adopted the RAF practice.

Zuckert's speech dealt mainly with the importance of the U-S Air Force in the Cold War...and the necessity of keeping it the most powerful air force in the world.
