  • Description

Western Nigerian Television, the first commercial and educational network in Africa, will be formally launched by the Premier of Western Nigeria by 31st October next. There will be two television transmitters, one in Ibadan, capital of Western Nigeria, the other in Abafon, near Lagos, serving between them a potential audience of some millions. The Government's basic objective is that the television service should be used as an extension to Western Nigeria's rapidly developing educational system, and a thousand sets have been ordered for installation in schools, hospitals and other institutions: 500 of these sets will come from Britain. A British firm is supplying and installing transmitting and studio equipment for the two stations and providing for the technical operation and maintenance for a preliminary period during which Nigerians will be trained in the operation of the new service.
