  • Description

Fourteen Negroes arrested during police raids on Black Panther offices in Philadelphia on Monday (August 31) are being held on 100,000 U.S. dollar bail each on charges of assault with intent to kill. The arrests came towards the end of the week-long wave of violence in which Black militants said they were out to kill "pigs" (police). A police sergeant was killed and seven other officers were wounded.

Three of the policemen were wounded by shotgun fire in dawn raids on the Black Panther centres. The 14 arrested were also charged with aggravated assault and battery on policemen, conspiracy and violation of the firearms act and other weapons offenses.

Police said they had seized 13 weapons, including 11 rifles and shotguns and two pistols, as well as about 1,000 rounds of ammunition.

The violence reached its bloodiest over the weekend. On Saturday (August 29) a gunman fired five bullets into a police sergeant alone in a police station while other officers were investigating the wounding nearby of another patrolman.

Returning from the first incident, the policemen found the sergeant lying dead on the station floor. Police said the two shootings were related and termed the sergeant's death as an "execution".

Philadelphia Police Commissioner, Frank Rizzo, said the weekend of violence against policemen was touched off on Saturday night by a group of "Black Revolutionaries" known as the Black Unity Council.
