The safest missile to talk about to-day is the one that stays on the ground. The Air Force has one in the Rocksfeller Centre.
The Air Force was only interested in education when it put its BOMARC missile on display beside the skating rink in Rocksfeller Plaza to-day. The Air Force considers the BOMARC one of the most important weapons in the defense of North America. The BOMARC is forty-seven feet from nose to tail. It is Boeing-built, ramjet-powered, capable of supersonic speeds and able to carry conventional or nuclear warheads. It is a ground-to-air missile used to combat enemy aircraft, and its effective range is 250 miles.
All this unclassified information was given out to-day by Brig. Gen. Arthur Agent Jnr., commander of the 26th Air Division. He is responsible for the air defense of a nine-state area of 45 million people. In this area, BOMARC installations are being built at Suffolk County Air Force Base and at McGuire near Trenton, Massachusetts also comes within the general's command. The BOMARC travels to Worcester for further display to-morrow.
