  • Description

The Prime Minister of Malta, Dom Mintoff, arrived in London on Wednesday (April 24th) for talke with the British Government. His visit follows the now Labour Government's tipped defence cuts in Malta, Cyprus and Singapore. Mr. Mintoff's visit is at the invitation of the Government.

The Maltese leader conferred with Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary, James Callaghen before talks and dinner with Prime Minister Harold Wilson.

Among other items to come under discussion were European Security, the Common Market and developments in the Mediterranean and Middle East.

Although there has been no announcement on troop cuts overseas, Defence Secretary Roy Mason said on Wednesday he was undertaking the most severe examination of Britain's defence commitments ever mounted in peacetime.

Britain has about two and a half thousand army, navy and airforce men in Malta, about two thousand in Singapore and about seven thousand in Cyprus. Malta gets about 14 million pounds sterling (33 million U.S. Dollars) a year form Britain and NATO for the use of the bases, as well as an estimated 15 million Dounds sterling (26 million U.S. Dollars) spent there by the British forces and their families.
