  • Description

In India Sanjay Gandhi, son of former Prime Minister Mrs Indira Gandhi, has been given a two-year hard labour prison sentence. On Tuesday (27 February) the news of his conviction caused demonstrations and rioting in New Delhi.

SYNOPSIS: Thirty-two-year-old Sanjay Gandhi was found guilty of stealing and destroying a film called Kissa Kursi Ka, which satirised the twenty-one months emergency rule enforced by his mother in 1975.

Also convicted with Sanjay was former Information and Broadcast Minister, Vidya Charan Shukla.

Sanjay was greeted by cheering supporters when he arrived at the Delhi courtroom to hear Judge O.N. Vohra pass sentence. But when the verdict was announced there was pandemonium. Sanjay's supporters threw documents and a book at the judge and scuffles broke out in court. The judge, angered by the outburst, walked out of the courtroom.

The conviction covered five charges brought against Sanjay out of a total of some twenty cases still pending for illegal activities allegedly carried out during his mother's emergency rule. His supporters say the charges are false and following the sentence they demonstrated outside the courtroom, throwing stones at police and military vehicles. The Gandhi-Shukla trial, which has dragged on for eleven months, is believed by political observers to have seriously damaged Indira Gandhi's plans to stage a major comeback. But both Sanjay and Shukla are expected to appeal against their sentence, which was suspended until March 26.
