    A LARGE CROWD FILLED THE ROMAN CATHOLIC HOLY SPIRIT CATHEDRAL WHERE MASS WAS SUNG AND LINED THE ROUTE TOT HE OSU MILITARY CEMETERY. MANY IN THE CROWD WORE A RED RIBBON AROUND THEIR HEADS IN A TRADITIONAL SIGN OF MOURNING AS THEY SANG AND CHANTED MEMORIAL SONGS AND BEAT DRUMS.

    THE MOUNTED COLOUR GUARD WHICH PRECEDED THE COFFIN HAD TO BATTLE ITS WAY THROUGH THE MASSIVE THRONG. IT TOOK MORE THAN HALF-AN-HOUR FOR OFFICIALS TO PART THE CROWD ON THE 100 YARDS (METER) MAIN ROAD TO THE CEMETERY ENTRANCE.

    SENIOR ARMY OFFICERS WERE PALLBEARERS AND THE FIRST OF MANY OFFICIALS WREATHS LAID ON THE GRAVE WAS PLACED BY LIEUTENANT-GENERAL JOSEPH ANKRAH, CHAIRMAN OF THE NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL (N.L.C.).

    GENERAL KOTOKA, 40-YEARS-OLD AND THE FATHER OF SIX CHILDREN, WAS THE NLC MEMBER RESPONSIBLE FOR DEFENCE, HEALTH, LABOUR AND SOCIAL WELFARE AS WELL AS COMMANDING THE ARMED FORCES.

    LAST YEAR HE LED THE MILITARY COUP WHICH REMOVED PRESIDENT KWAME NKRUMAH FROM POWER.
