    FRANCE TODAY (THURSDAY) CELEBRATED BASTILLE DAY, THE 177TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF THE FRENCH REPUBLIC. IN PARIS, PRESIDENT DE GAULLE TOOK THE SALUTE AT A 90-MINUTE MILITARY PARADE.

    IT WAS THE FIRST APPEARANCE IN A BASTILLE DAY PARADE FOR FOREIGN LEGIONARIES SINCE THEIR DISGRACE DURING THE ALGERIAN WAR. THEIR FAMOUS 80-PACES-A-MINUTE SLOW GAIT WAS LAST SEEN AT THE PARADE IN 1960, A YEAR BEFORE TWO LEGION PARATROOP REGIMENTS TOOK PART IN AN ABORTIVE GENERALS' REVOLT AGAINST GAULLIST POLICY IN ALGERIA.

    THE TRADITIONAL 14 JULY PARADE MARKS THE FALL OF THE BASTILLE PRISON IN 1789 DURING THE REVOLUTION THAT LED TO THE FIRST FRENCH REPUBLIC. THE PARADE WAS LED BY A FLY-PAST OF 15 MIRAGE IV SUPERSONIC BOMBERS, CARRIERS OF FRANCE'S ATOMIC BOMBS. GROUND FORCES INCLUDED DETACHMENTS OF U.S.-BUILT HONEST JOHN ROCKETS.
