  • Description

Lebanese Premier Rashid Karami told a news conference on Saturday (5 July) that life in Beirut had returned to normal, and that there was now complete security throughout the country.

He said Lebanon had learned a "very stiff lesson" from recent factional violence which claimed more than 1,000 casualties.

He stated that there was no reason to fear new bloodshed as "nobody has any interest in going back to the recent past."
Mr. Karami, who became premier for the eighth time in the past twenty year on Tuesday, described the new peace as a Lebanese miracle.

"The proof is that everyone has gone back to work and recovered from an atmosphere of chaos and panic," he added.
