SYNOPSIS: In the Uruguayan town of Soca, near Montevideo, on Monday, more than 40 Tupamaros guerrillas took over a police station, killed two policemen and stole guns and ammunition. Police have made a nation-wide search for the group, who held practically the whole town captive before escaping.

A police spokesman said the guerrillas blasted the station with a hand grenade and then rushed in spraying machine-gun fire indiscriminately.

Apart from seizing the police station, the guerrillas took over the local telephone exchange and other key points, paralysing communications with outside areas. Some of the Tupamaros held waiters and customers at gunpoint while others controlled road blocks around the town. The Tupamaros last year hit world headlines by kidnapping British Ambassador Geoffrey Jackson and hiding him for more than eight months.
