Background: INTRODUCTION: England strengthened their position in their World Cup qualifying group by beating Luxembourg by five goals to nil at Wembley, London, on Wednesday (30 March). The win put England top of their European group, ahead of Italy, but both have several more matches to play.

SYNOPSIS: England were disorganised at the start and continually thwarted as Luxembourg packed their defensive zone. The only consolation came when England captain Kevin Keegan scored after nine minutes - which helped subdue a restless crowd of 85,000 people packed into the Wembley stands.

England's next attempt at the Luxembourg goal brought more frustration - they were out for goals all the way, but this one from Dave Watson hit a post and Trevor Francis hit the rebound wide.

In the second half things started to warm up a little and it was Trevor Francis who set England on their way with a second goal, hitting home a low shot through a crowd of players in the 58th minute.

After this they came thick and fast Ipswich star Paul Mariner had been brought in to give the England attack more balance and the tactics paid off handsomely -- leaving part-timers Luxembourg floundering. They never went into the match with much confidence to start with, but played bravely nonetheless. Ray Kennedy with England's third goal.

Goal number four for England from brilliant and beautiful Southampton star Mich Channon - his 18th goal as an international.

During the closing minutes of play one might expect a little relaxation, but England Manage Don Revie's instructions were clear -- a goal glut or trouble -- and once again 28-year-old Channon puts one in on a penalty, bringing England's score to a respectable if not overwhelming five goals to nil.
