Background: Kenya coasted confidently to a 2-0 victory over Ethiopia in the first round of their first leg match in the African Nations Cup in Nairobi on Saturday(22 November). It was their first victory of the season.

The Kenyan defence bottled the middle up so effectively that their goalkeeper, James Sianga, rarely had a chance to show off his considerable skills. When the Ethiopian attack did get going Sianga was always there.

Kenya's centre-forward, Arthur Okwemba, opened the scoring after 21 minutes when he left the Ethiopian defence flat-footed to slip the ball past goalkeeper Getachew. But in scoring, Okwemba turned his knee so sharply that he dislocated it and had to be taken off. Later he was taken to hospital.

In complete command of the game, Kenya made a hard job of translating their mid-field superiority into more goals. Only in the 76th minute did a beautiful interchange of passes, capped by a curving shot from inside right William Ouma, beat Getachew, to make the score 2-0.

The victory was a great encouragement for Kenyan trainer Ekhart Krautzun, imported three weeks ago from West Germany with the brief of putting Kenya on the soccer map. His three-week training stint with the Kenya squad at the residential training camp at high-altitude Thomson's Falls showed in the smooth teamwork and quick movements on the field.

Nearly 9,000 spectators watched the match, played in dry, dull weather. The second leg is to be played in Addis Ababa on Sunday.
