Background: KATANGESE ARMOURED CARS SPITTING FIRE FROM MOUNTED MACHINE GUNS HUNTED U.N. TROOPS IN THE SUBURBS OF ELISABETHVILLE, CAPITAL OF KATANGA, DEC. 5. BY DEC. 7, BELGIAN SOURCES ESTIMATED 80 U.N. TROOPS AND 62 KATANGESE TROOPS DEAD AND SOME 100 INJURED ON BOTH SIDES.

IN THE CONFUSION OF THE CONTINUED FIGHTING, GURKHA U.N. TROOPS FIRED THEIR BAZOOKAS ON A U.S. SEVENTH DAY ADVENTISTS' MISSION, AND REPORTEDLY APOLOGISED AFTERWARDS, AND SWEDISH U.N. TROOPS IN ERROR FIRED GRENADES AT A CROWDED HOSPITAL.

KATANGESE PARACOMMANDOS RACED UNDER FIRE ACROSS THE SUBURBAN STREETS AND LATER LOBBED MORTAR BOMBS ON THE U.N. HEADQUARTERS IN THE CITY. AMBULANCES WITH WOUNDED SPED FROM THE FIGHTING AREA DAMID THE SMOKE OF THE ENGAGEMENT. BUT THERE WAS ONE OASIS OF IMMOBILITY IN THE SWAY OF FIGHTING: THE WRECK OF A KATANGESE POLICE VAN, HIT BY DIRECT U.N. FIRE, AND BY IT, TWO POLICE OFFICERS KILLED AND A GROUP OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN, SOME WOUNDED, ALL FROZEN IN FEAR.
