Background: The World Boxing Association's Junior Welterweight Champion, Antonio Cervantes of Colombia retained his title by outpointing Adriano Marrero of the Dominican Republic over 15 rounds at Maracay, Venezuela on Saturday (5 November).

SYNOPSIS: The fight place in the bull ring at Maracay. The champion, who's known as Kid Pampele, is wearing white trunks. He was defending his title for the first time. In the first rounds he kept his opponent back with a series of lightning jabs, which appeared to trouble Marrero.

The two boxers had met once before, but in that fight the world title was not at stake.

By the sixth round, Marrero was showing more aggression. This was to be his best round, and within seconds, the champion was to be in real trouble, as Marrero moved in with a hard right. It caught Cervantes and put him on the canvas, but after the compulsory count he was back in the fight.

In the next round Marrero sustained his attack, and there was little sign at this point of Cervantes collecting the points that were to take him to victory.

Later Cervantes told reporters that he'd hurt right hand in one of the later rounds, but it did not affect his control of the fight.

By the final round it was clear that the fight had gone to the champion. Marrero said he thought he'd scored more telling blows but all three referees gave the decision to Cervantes by a clear margin.
