Background: The plain truth is ladies and gentlemen that there is nothing less convincing than this slick salesman of synthetic science, with which Mr Wilson tries to depict the Labour Party as a modern party. What do they do when we come to the point. We in the Conservative party say we want to modernise railways - who objects, the Socialists. We say we want to modernise local government - who objects, the Socialists. They prate about automation, but when it comes to getting rid of restrictive practices, who makes all the fuss - the Socialist certainly it isn't us, and the truth of the matter is, ladies and gentlemen, that their policies are as stuffy as an old front Victorian parlour, and we have decided, we know it wouldn't be in some places a popular decision to end resale price maintenance where it is against the public interest. Now there may be cases, there probably are where resale price maintenance can be demonstrated to be in the national interest. Our legislation will provide some machinery so that when this is proved the practice can go on. But, in general, ladies and gentlemen it cannot be in the interests of consumers to peg prices at artificially high levels.
