It was United States day at Ghana's second International Trade Fair in Accra on Friday (Feb 5). The unfurling of the US flag took place at the same time that the Apollo 14 astronauts were planting the stars and stripes on the surface of the Moon. The entire American pavilion is devoted to U.S. Space achievements and includes samples of Moonrock among the exhibits.

SYNOPSIS: Mr Joseph Mensah, Ghana's Finance Minister, presidented over the flag-raising ceremony marking United States National Day at Ghana's second International Trade Fair in Accra, on Friday. Ghanaians, he said, shared Americans' joy over the success of their space exploration.

The United States Ambassador in Ghana, Mr Thomas McElhiney, told Ghanaian officials that it was with very special pride that he watched the unfurling of the American Flag in Accra at the very same time that the astronauts of Apollo 14 were planting it on the Moon's surface.

Mr McElhiney then escorted the Ghanaian officials around the American pavilion which is devoted entirely to their achievements in space exploration. A sample of Moon rock was the highlight of their displays.

Most of the exhibits are illustrations but there are also models of communications satellites and of then Apollo 14 spacecraft.

Telstar, the world famous telecommunications satellite, was represented among the exhibits.

With its emphasis on space exploration and coinciding with the Apollo 14 Moon programme, it was appropriate that the pavilion have a special radio link-up bringing live broadcasts from the astronauts on the lunar surface.

Thirty-two nations are taking part in the two-week fair which opened last Monday. Its theme is 'Africa progresses.'
