    On February 6 the State library of the USSR named after V.I. Lenin is marking its fiftieth anniversary. The library's building is situated in the centre of Moscow opposite the Kremlin. The library's book shelves contain over 27 million volumes. As many as 3,000 readers can work in its 21 reading rooms simultaneously. Over 40 million persons have used its reading rooms during half a century...

    Today, this National Library of the Soviet Union is one of the greatest treasure-houses of the world culture. The library's stocks include printed works and manuscripts in 202 different languages. The Library exchanges books with some 4,000 organizations in 102 countries...

    The library's most valuable asset is the collection of unique books of the manuscript department. This collection includes Russian editions up to the 18th century, as well as foreign editions of the 15-17 centuries. Some of the most valuable items are now displayed at the exhibition "Book Treasures".

    Visitors can see a collection of books-- chronicle of book history beginning from incunabula... Presented here are several copies of the first Russian printed book -- "Apostle". Nearby, one can see a fine gospel cover, Russian work of the 17th century... On display are the first books by West-European printers. One of these books is "Jeremiah's Message", oil-printed edition with hand-drawn initial letters. That book appeared in Mainz in 1970...

    Besides there are the following books of interest:
    - The first edition of "Historia Naturalis" by Plinius Segundus, Caius (Venezia, 1469).

    - One of the most complete collections of the works by G. Bruno which appeared in his life-time. It consists of 18 books...

    - A unique edition of "Divine Comedy"by Dante with illustrations made to the drawings by Boticelli...

    - Thomas More's "De Optimo Reipublicae Statu Deque Nowa Insula, Utopia Libellus Uere Aureus" which was published in his life-time...

    - The first edition of "Astronomieum Caesareum" by German geographer Apianus Petrus...

    - Collection of unique works-- modern books unusually made...

    - Lenin's works including his first works published abroad are prominently displaced at the exhibition...
