  • Description

The Prime Minister of Khmer Republic, Long Boret, returned to Phnom Penh on Saturday (7 December) from the United States to face possible political in-fighting in his country.

Though he had a certain amount of success at the United Nations there are fears of the possibility of a coup d'etat in Phnom Penh, and political observers there consider his position is "shaky".

Although the Cambodian Premier came home to a full official welcome from the Cabinet, the Chief of the Armed Forces, General Sosthene Fernandez, was not present.

His absence led to further speculations on the relations between the Armed Forces and the civilian government. The Armed Forces were said to have openly defied the civilian leadership several times recently.
