    PRESIDENT MARARIOS YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) OFFICIALLY OPENED CYPRUS'S NEW GBP1 MILLION STERLING AIRPORT TERMINAL BUILDING AT NICOSIA AIRPORT. THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT CONTRIBUTED GBP500,000 STERLING FOR THE DEVELOPMENT UNDER THE TREATY OF ESTABLISHMENT.

    THE NEW AIR TERMINAL IS PART OF A MAJOR REDEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME BEING UNDERTAKEN BY THE CYPRUS GOVERNMENT. FUTURE PLANS INCLUDE THE EXTENSION OF THE MAIN RUNWAY BY 800 YARDS (METRES), AND FURTHER IMPROVEMENTS TO THE TERMINAL AND CONTROL SYSTEMS.

    THE CYPRIOT MINISTER OF COMMUNICATIONS AND WORKS (MR. TITOS PHANOS) SPOKE BEFORE THE OFFICIALLY RIBBON-CUTTING CEREMONY BY PRESIDENT MAKARIOS. AFTERWARDS 'LIGHTENING' JET FIGHTERS OF THE BRITISH ROYAL AIR FORCE FLEW PAST.

    THE CYPRUS GOVERNMENT EXPECTS A NUMBER OF COUNTRIES TO RESPOND TO ITS RECENT DRIVE FOR TOURISTS AND HOPES FOR AN INCREASED SHARE OF THE WORLD'S TOURIST MARKET. ALREADY TWO BRITISH AIRLINERS HOLD CONTRACTS WITH CYPRUS AND THE GERMAN AIRLINE LUFTHANSA IS SHORTLY TO INAUGURATE A BY-WEEKLY SERVICE.

    LAST YEAR 3,476 AIRLINES CARRIED 248,599 PASSENGERS TO THE REPUBLIC AND THIS YEAR TRAFFIC IS EXPECTED TO BE INCREASED BY ABOUT 15 PER CENT.
