    SATURDAY'S COMPETITION CONCENTRATED ON TIME TRIALS AT A STADIUM IN ALGIERS. THE ALGERIAN MINISTER OF YOUTH AND SPORT, M. BEN MAHMOUD, WAS THERE TO MEET LEADERS OF THE SEVEN-MAN CYCLING TEAMS. ALL THE COMPETITORS ARE AMATEUR CYCLISTS.

    TODAY (SUNDAY) SAW THE START OF THE TOUR PROPER. BELGIAN NUMBER TWO GEORGES CLAES WORE THE RACE LEADER'S YELLOW JERSEY ON THE STRENGTH OF HIS PERFORMANCE IN THE TIME TRIALS.

    DURING TODAY'S TWO LEGS-FROM ALGIERS TO BEHAIA-EAST GERMAN RIDERS PUT UP THE MOST CONCERTED CHALLENGE, FILLING THE FIRST FIVE PLACES IN THE GENERAL CLASSIFICATION AT THE END OF THE DAY.

    ALTOGETHER, 112 RIDERS FROM 14 COUNTRIES ARE COMPETING. ONE TEAM IS INTERNATIONAL AND ALGERIA HAS TWO TEAMS IN THE FIELD. OTHER COUNTRIES REPRESENTED INCLUDE ENGLAND, BELGIUM, FRANCE, HOLLAND, ITALY, POLAND, SWITZERLAND, YUGOSLAVIA AND WEST GERMANY.
