In his opening speech, Colonel Gaddafi launched an attack on Egypt's role in the Middle East. He said that last year's Afro-Arab summit in Cairo had agre???d on an economic boycott of Israel, and that the Egyptian government had faile??? to implement this by allowing the Israelis acc???ss to the Suez canal. Colonel Gaddafi's attack prompted the Egyptian delegation to walk out of the conference, which is being attended by delegates from th??? OAU's 49 member states.
Wearing African robes, Colonel Gaddafi went on to say that the OAU must increase assistance to liberation movements fighting in Rhodesia and called for an intensification of the guerrilla war against the white minority government. He described the internal settlement now being negotiated in Salisbury as un???cceptable to Africa, saying it could only give rise to an independence devoid of real meaning. He urged delegates to push for a solution acceptable to the Patriotic Front.
