Background: Demonstrations calling for Enosis -- the union of Cyprus with Greece -- continued in Nicosia yesterday (Sunday). About 3,000 Greek Cypriot opponents of President Makarios paraded through the streets carrying pictures of General George Grivas, the former Eoka leader thought to have secretly returned to the Island.
The demonstrator made for a Nicosia cinema where they were addressed by former Chief Justice George Vassiliades. But despite an earlier promise that the rally would hear the voice of Grivas, the General remained silent on this occasion. After the rally had broken up, for people were arrested and two policemen injured in a brief outbreak of violence.
