Background: Veteran Milan racer Giorgio Mondadori won the BP and Daily Telegraph power-boat race on Saturday (August 18) in his twin-engined craft 'Nicapao X'. British designer Don Shead was second in 'Unowot' and another Italian, Carlo Bonomi -- who is currently runner-up to countryman Balestrieri in the world championship points table -- was third in 'Dry Martini'.

The race, run from the Isle of Wight to Hastings and back along the Sussex and Hampshire coastline -- a round distance of some 1653 nautical miles (280 kms) -- qualifies for the world drivers' championships. All sizes of boat were entered, from the smaller family cruisers to the multi-engined and turbined craft capable of over 80 knots
