Background: Japan's largest sounding rocket was fired successfully into space by scientists of Tokyo University's Institute of Space and Aeronautical Science at Cape Uchinoura, Kagoshima Prefecture, extreme southern tip of Kyushu Island.

The three stage Lambda 111-2 rocket, 19.1 meters long and weighing seven tons, was launched at an angle of 79 degree at 2:01 p.m.at Tokyo University's Kagoshima Space center.An hour later the launching, space center scientists announced that the rocket's third stage reached an altitude of 1,040 kilometres,
