  • Description

For lovers of horses the horsemarket held at Zuid Laron, ten miles south of Groningen, is a perennial attraction.

The horsemarket has its roots in medieval times - it has been held regularly without a break each year since the twelfth century.

Farmers from the neighbourhood and from all parts of western Europe come every third Tuesday in October to buy and sell horses.

This year Zuid Laren welcomed 150,000 visitors and 2000 horses, a sure guide to its importance and popularity as a horse-dealing centre. In 1946 and 1947 the largest number of horses were entered, but since then there has been a steady decline, perhaps due to increasing mechanisation in,many spheres, farming included.

Nevertheless in spite of mechanisation there will always be a job for man's faithful friend and servant to do. And to Zuid Laren they will come year in year out to talk horses, buy horses, sell horses - and to strike bargains in the time-honoured fashion of the horse-dealer by slapping bands together.
