  • Description

INTRODUCTION: France began voting on Sunday (13 March) in municipal elections seen as a full dress rehearsal for a showdown between the government majority and the Socialist-Communist alliance at general elections next year. The ballot box popularity of President Valery Giscard d'Estaing's majority parties is expected to receive a stern test from the left-wing opposition.

SYNOPSIS: With eyes on the 1978 general elections, candidates for over 36,000 council seats have turned the normally uninspiring municipal balloting into a major political event. Former Prime Minister, Jacques Chirac, has caused a cabinet crisis by running against the presidential candidate, Industry Minister, Michal d'Ornano, for the important new post of Paris mayor. This post is expected to become the third most important political position in France.

Both the government majority parties and the opposition Socialist-Communist alliance have campaigned fervently. Political passions ran high with two people hurt in a fight between bill-stickers in Montepellier. In the southern town of Draguignan shots were fired when rival groups clashed on Saturday (12 March).
