    Background: TARN TARAN, PUNJAB, INDIA

The city of Tarn Taran, in the North Indian state of Punjab, is slowly returning to normal after recent bitter violence between the predominantly Sikh community and Indian Government authorities. Sikh extremists had fortified much of the town, and, as with the holy city of Amritsar, had used the local Sikh temple as a base for much of their attacks. With the relaxation of tensions, the Tarn Taran temple was opened to the public on June 18, although much of the sandbagged bunkers set up by the armed militants were still in place. Authorities now permit worshippers to hold their religious services in the local temple, as the army-applied curfew has been lifted. Indian officials say it is premature to declare that the state of Punjab had seen the last of Sikh militancy, but all factions in the recent violent fighting are hoping that the situation will continue on its road to renewed normality.
