  • Description

Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin ended a nine-day visit to France on December 9th and flew back to Moscow after saying farewell to President Charles de Gaulle.

Before travelling to Orly Airport in Paris, Kosygin visited de Gaulle, his official host, at the Chateau de Rambouillet, near the capital.

An honor guard of the Garde Republicaine, sabers drawn, was lined up in the courtyard as de Gaulle and Kosygin emerged. The two leaders shook hands warmly, and then Kosygin, accompanied by French Premier Georges Pompidou, drove away in a motorcade to the airport.

Kosygin made no farewell statement at the airfield, where he was seen off by Pompidou. He boarded his special turbojet so fast that some high-ranking French officials, including State Minister Lois Joxe, had no time to say goodbye.

Shortly after his departure, a communique was released in Paris on the Kosygin-de Gaulle talks.

In the joint declaration, Kosygin and de Gaulle charged that "outside" intervention had caused the war in Vietnam to reach grave proportions.

The statement also warned that the Vietnam war was threatening to spread into countries neighbouring on the strife-torn nation.

The declaration called the Vietnamese was "the chief obstacle to an international relaxation of tension and the establishment of lasting peaceful relations between numerous countries."
The declaration also called on all European nations to establish among themselves friendly relations on the French-Soviet model, with a view to insuring a stable peace in Europe.

It held out the possibility of an All-European conference to be convened to discuss European security problems and cooperation between all European countries.

At the same time, the communique spoke of the growing warmth of French-Soviet cooperation and predicted its further strengthening in the coming months.
