  • Description

The leader of West Germany's Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Herr Helmut Kohl was out campaigning on Wednesday (30 April) for the most important of the six state elections in the country this year.

Herr Kohl, Prime Minister of the Rhineland Palatinate, was in Essen to speak at a mass rally canvassing for voters to win the election in the North-Rhine-Westphalia on sunday (4 May)
Political observers believed that Herr Kohl was actively campaigning for the state election as it was just as important for him as for the party to win the election.

The General Secretary of CDU, Herr Kurt Biedenkopf has said that he would support nomination of Herr Kohl to contest the Chancellorship at the Federal Election next year. However, his decision appeared to depend on the results of the North-Rhine-Westphalia election.

Herr Kohl's main contenders, according to reports, is the leader of the Bavarian sister party, the Christian SocIal Union, Herr Franz-Josef Strauss who has firm party and public support especially in his state, Bavaria. It is being speculated that Herr Strauss might emerge as a candidate for Chancellor.
