  • Description

Brazil has imposed restrictions on fuel consumption in an effort to try and reduce its soaring oil import bill.
Oil imports have more than quadrupled since 1973 and now cost the country more than 3.3 billion U.S. dollars a year. They're one of the causes of Brazil's severe economic difficulties and have resulted in steep inflation and a continued trading deficit. The government considered petrol rationing, but rejected it in favour of a campaign it calls "rationalisation".
