  • Description

THE SOVIET UNION TODAY (TUESDAY) LAUNCHED A LONE COSMONAUT INTO ORBIT ROUND THE EARTH. UNOFFICIAL REPORTS SUGGESTED ANOTHER MANNED SPACECRAFT MIGHT BE SENT UP TO JOIN HIM. THE NEW SPACEMAN, 41-YEAR-OLD LIEUTENANT-COLONEL VLADIMIR SHATALOV BLASTED OFF FROM BAIKONUR COSMODROME IN CENTRAL ASIA ABOARD A CAPSULE NAMED SOYUZ-4.

A VIDEOTAPED RECORDING OF THE BLAST-OFF WAS SHOWN TO VIEWERS OVER MOSCOW TELEVISION 90 MINUTES AFTER LAUNCHING. SOVIET TELEVISION STATIONS ALSO BEGAN IMMEDIATE TRANSMISSIONS FROM THE PILOT'S CABIN ON BOARD THE CRAFT WHERE COLONEL SHATALOV SAT STRAPPED INTO HIS SEAT, SMILING GLADLY AND WAVING AT THE CAMERA.

COLONEL SHATALOV TOLD VIEWERS THAT HE CAME THROUGH THE LIFT-OFF PERIOD WITHOUT TROUBLE AND THAT THE SHIP WAS FUNCTIONING WELL.

THERE WAS NO INDICATION OF THE FURTHER PROGRAMME FOR THE FLIGHT BUT GROUND CONTROL TOLD COLONEL SHATALOV TO BEGIN "THE SET PROGRAMME FOR THE NEXT 24 HOURS".

SOYUZ-4 IS ORBITING THE EARTH EVERY 88.5 MINUTES. AT ITS HIGHEST POINT IT IS ABOUT 141 MILES (225 KMS) ABOVE THE PLANET AND AT ITS LOWEST IS 108 MILES (17 KMS). AS WITH SOYUZ-3 LAUNCHED LAST OCTOBER, IT HAS A PILOT'S CABIN A SERVICE MODULE, WHICH COLONEL SHATALOV PROMISED HE WOULD SHOW TELEVISION VIEWERS LATER.
