  • Description

TEN THOUSAND INDONESIAN STUDENTS HELD A RALLY IN DJAKARTA ON THURSDAY (MAY 12) TO MARK THE DATE ON WHICH THE PROVISIONAL PEOPLE'S CONSULTATIVE CONGRESS, HIGHEST AUTHORITY IN THE STATE, WAS TO HAVE MET.

THE RALLY WAS ATTENDED BY THE COMMANDANT OF THE MARINE CORPS (KKO), MAJOR-GENERAL HARTONO.

LIEUTENANT-GENERAL SUHARTO, CHIEF OF THE GENERAL STAFF AND HOLDER OF EXECUTIVE POWER IN INDONESIA, POSTPONED THE CONGRESS MEETING APPARENTLY TO AVOID A POLITICAL CRISIS DEVELOPING AROUND THE PERSON, OFFICES AND ACTIONS OF PRESIDENT SUKARNO WHO IS UNDERSTOOD TO HAVE OPPOSED IT.

THE STUDENTS CHANTED 'LONG LIVE THE INDONESIAN PEOPLE', 'LONG LIVE THE FORCES OF PROGRESS AND REVOLUTION', 'LONG LIVE SUHARTO' AND 'HAND SUBANDRIO' (DEPOSED AND IMPRISONED FIRST DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER AND FOREIGN MINISTER).

A STUDENT LEADER SAID GENERAL HARTONO HAD ATTENDED THE RALLY TO DEMONSTRATE THE UNTRUTH OF SLANDERS THAT THE MARINE CORPS WAS NOT UNITED WITH THE PEOPLE IN THEIR STRUGGLE TO RE-ESTABLISH JUSTICE AND RIGHTS IN THE COUNTRY.

MAJOR-GENERAL HARTONO, IN HIS SPEECH SAID THAT THERE WAS NO NEED FOR ANY FEAR OF THE MARINE CORPS, WHICH LIKE THE OTHER ARMED SERVICES, WAS BORN FROM THE PEOPLE AND OPPOSED ONLY IMPERIALISTS, COLONIALISTS AND COUNTER-REVOLUTIONARIES.

CONTINUING, HE SAID THE REVOLUTION HAD TO BE COMPACT AND DIRECTED IN A SINGLE DIRECTION. IT COULD NOT BE WAGED FOR THE INTERESTS OF ONE GROUP ONLY.
