Background: Basketball......and China narrowly beat the Japanese men's national basketball team 76 points to 75 in Tokyo on Saturday (8 April). It was China's third consecutive win against the Japanese national side, and they remain unbeaten after four matches of their seven match tour.
SYNOPSIS: From the start, it was the Japanese, playing from left to right in the light shirts, who went into attack. But the Chinese soon intercepted the ball and proved quick to counter-attack. They also demonstrated skilful team work as they kept possession and put the Japanese under pressure near their basket. Basketball, which originated in the United States late last century is growing in popularity in Asian countries, and both teams soon showed the high quality of their play.
The Japanese -- keen to avenge three earlier defeats at the hands of the Chinese -- were unlucky to score on this occasion.
As it was, it was the Chinese who built up an early lead, thanks to some accurate shooting from the penalty spot. And they went in at half time leading by an eight point margin.
In the second half, the Chinese increased their lead and at one stage led by 70 points to 50. But the japanese came back into the match and despite and efforts of China's big-man, Mu Tie Zhu, who is seven and a half feet tall (230 cm) they narrowed the deficit to a ??? one point at the end.
