    AN AIRCRAFT LOADED WITH FOOD AND MEDICAL SUPPLIES TOOK OFF FROM COTONOU AIRPORT LAST THURSDAY (30 JANUARY) ON THE FIRST FLIGHT OF THE INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS'S NEW AIRLIFT FROM DAHOMEY TO THE BREAKAWAY NIGERIAN STATE OF BIAFRA.

    THE RED CROSS AIRCRAFT ARE DUE TO MAKE TWO FLIGHTS A NIGHT WITH A TOTAL NIGHTLY LOAD OF 12 TONS.

    RED CROSS OFFICIALS HAVE SAID THAT THE RED CROSS AIRCRAFT WILL BRING IN TO COTONOU FROM SANTA ISABEL, ON THE ISLAND OF FERNANDO PO, FOOD AND MEDICAL SUPPLIES STORED IN EQUATORIAL GUINEA. IT WAS ALSO SAID THAT MORE THAN A MILLION PEOPLE WERE RECEIVING RED CROSS AID IN NIGERIA.

    RED CROSS OFFICIALS ADDED THAT THE NIGHT FLIGHTS WERE BEING MADE WITH THE AGREEMENT OF BOTH SIDES OF THE NIGERIA-BIAFRA CIVIL WAR.

    THE ALL-SWISS INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS COMMITTEE (I.C.R.C.) SUSPENDED ITS MERCY FLIGHTS FROM SANTA ISABEL AFTER THE GOVERNMENT OF EQUATORIAL GUINEA IMPOSED RESTRICTIONS THERE THREE WEEKS AGO.

    THE AIRCRAFT WHICH LEFT COTONOU LAST THURSDAY AND ONE WHICH TOOK OFF FRIDAY (31 JANUARY) FAILED TO REACH BIAFRA'S ULI AIRSTRIP. THE AIRCRAFT COMMITTEE SAID TODAY (SATURDAY) THAT THE AIRCRAFT HAD TURNED BACK ON THE TWO DAYS BECAUSE THE PILOT DID NOT KNOW THE NEW LANDING CODES FOR ULI AIRSTRIP.
