  • Description

The former leader of the EOKA movement in Cyprus attended a Requiem Mass in Athens today (Sunday) in memory of EOKA men how died during the Cyprus campaign. The service was also attended by the Greek Prime Minister, Mr. George Papandreou. Later General Grivas laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

As the former EOKA chief laid his wreath, a large crowd present cheered and shouted "Enossis" and "Free Cyprus".

Later in the day General Grivas told a mass rally in an Athens theatre that he was ready "for new sacrifices if need be". Wearing a grey civilian suit, he told the crowd that Cyprus independence obtained through the London and Zurich agreement was "false freedom". The only solution to the Cyprus problem was self-determination, he said.
