  • Description

The deeds of land confiscated from members of the Oraon Tribe over 50 years ago by the then-British rulers for their part in the independence movement were returned to the tribesfolk by India's Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, during a ceremony at Tanchi, on Monday (2 October).

The land given back concerns mainly the 18,452 Orano tribe-members called Tanabhagats. It was lost in 1917 when their predecessors took active part in the independence campaign and refused to pay taxes to the British, whom they then described as 'alien rulers'.

SYNOPSIS: Fifty-five years ago a sect of the Indian Orson tribe known as Tanabhagats, had their land confiscated by the then-British rulers for supporting an independence movement, and for not paying taxes. The punishment was completed when the British - described by the Tanabhagats as 'alien rulers' - auctioned their land off to willing buyers.

Now the tribes people are getting back that land they lest in nineteen-seventeen... from India's Prime Minister, Mrs. Gandhi, who flew to Ranchi on Monday for a special ceremony to mark the occasion. Understandably, the reception she got from the eighteen-thousand Tanabhagats was enthusiast.
