  • Description

President Tito of Yugoslavia, surrounded by strict security, went to Duesseldorf on Wednesday (June 26) to meet his country's soccer team before its match against West Germany. However, his presence didn't seem to help as Yugoslavia's World Cup team lost 2-0.

President Tito didn't stay to see the match because security officials were apprehensive for his safety in the crowded sports stadium. The main fear was that exiled Yugoslav extremists would take advantage of the situation.

Before going to Duesseldorf President Tito spoke to a group of Yugoslav migrant workers in Bonn and sid he was more than satisfied with his talks over the past two days.

The Yugoslav leader is on his first official visit to West Germany. During his speech today he expressed satisfaction at the way his political and economic talks had gone.

SYNOPSIS:Yugoslavia lost their World Cup soccer match against West Germany in Duesseldorf on Wednesday, but it wasn't through lack of support. President Tito went to the city to wish his country's side luck before the kickoff.

It is the first official visit by President Tito to West Germany, and it coincided with the World Cup finals. But despite the game result, the visit has been a success. The President told a meeting of migrant Yugoslav workers in Bonn before he left for Duesseldorf that he was more than satisfied with his talks over the past two days.

The main threat to President Tito comes from exiled Yugoslavians who it is feared will attempt to assassinate the visiting President. Strict security surrounded his trip to Duesseldorf and the President was advised not to stay for the World Cup match itself because of the threat.
