  • Description

India and Pakistan formally resumed diplomatic relations on Saturday (24 July) with the accreditation of Pakistani Ambassador Mr. Syed Fida Hassan.

SYNOPSIS: The ceremony took place in New Delhi, the Indian capital, at the home of President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed.

Mr. Hassan is the first Pakistani Ambassador to India since diplomatic elations were broken off before the 1971 Bangladeshi war. The Indian President welcomed the new envoy, and said the resumption of diplomatic relations between the two neighbours was 'an event of great significance'. Under a broad agreement between the two countries, signed two months ago, Pakistan and India have also restored civilian airline flights and rail links between them for the first time since the 1965 Kashmiri war. Private trading links are also to be resumed. The first train services between the two nations under the new agreement began running on Thursday (22 July).
