  • Description

King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, cut down by an assassin's bullet, was today buried in an unmarked grave after a funeral attended by heads of state and hundreds of thousands of his subjects from all parts of his Kingdom.

The ceremonies took place in Riyadh, where the new king, King Khalid, was installed as monarch.

Among the heads of state who came to pay homage to King Faisal were King Hussein of Jordan, President Anwar Sadat of Egypt, President Assad of Syria and the leader of the Palestine Liberation movement, Yasser Arafat. President Idi Amin of Uganda was a late and unexpected arrival.

They walked in the streets of the Saudi capital when the funeral cortege and the body of the King wound its way to the great mosque where prayers were said.

Hundreds of thousands of people from all over Saudi Arabia flocked to Riyadh when news of the assassination was broadcast yesterday, and they remained on the streets to witness the passing of the funeral procession.

Later, in accordance with custom, the King's body was laid to rest in a simple grave, unmarked and without a monument.
