  • Description

The completion of the giant Akosombo Dam on the River Volta in Ghana has brought important economic benefits.

Electric power from the dam is being used to operate an aluminium smelter at Temu and an agreement has recently been reached for Ghana to supply power to the neighbouring countries of Togo and Dahomey.

However the GBP70,000,000 project also disrupted the lives of 80,000 people whose homes were flooded when the dam was completed. These people were moved into re-settlement townships and given Government help in starting new enterprises.

The displaced villagers are taking part in an agricultural development programme to improve cotton, tobacco and vegetable crops and increase production of pigs, poultry and fish.

This programme is now helping to lessen Ghana's need to import food.
